How Sobriety Transforms Gratitude This Thanksgiving

Contributing Writer – Jason Mayo

Today, I’m not just thankful—I’m grateful. Sobriety has taught me the difference. Thankfulness is noticing the good things around you; gratitude is feeling it deep down and recognizing how much you’ve grown because of those moments.

This Thanksgiving, I’m raising my favorite mocktail—a Fever Tree Ginger Beer with a splash of cranberry—to toast a life where I’m fully present. Sobriety isn’t just skipping the beer and the wine; it’s showing up for the people I love and, yes, even helping in the kitchen when the meal is over. Instead of passing out on the couch, I get to be of service—washing dishes, carving the turkey, and cherishing the moments that really matter.

I’m grateful to wake up today clear-headed, present, and free. I’m thankful for a life that’s not perfect, but real. For the people who supported me, even when I wasn’t easy to love. And for the simple joy of remembering the food, the laughter, and the love that fills this day.

If you’re sober today—or even just thinking about it—you’ve got something to be proud of. Sobriety is the gift that keeps on giving—mocktails, dish duty, and all—and for that, I’ll never stop saying thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving from Sober Not Subtle! Let’s make today count.
