Seeking a Life Beyond Complacency

Guest Contributor – Amy Bazerman

Some days I yearn for an extinction level event to arrive. Doesn’t really matter what it is: Plague, asteroid, global warming, alien invasion, zombies, whatever. Just something to completely wipe out most everything and leave a clean slate would be good. Like a do-over but on a bigger scale.

You might think I’m morbid or fatalistic or have some death wish. Far from it. I want to live. But I want to really, really live. I want to stop going through the motions everyday. I want to escape complacency. I want to feel the blood coursing through my veins and my heart pounding in my ears. I want to feel like I want to survive, not just merely survive. I want to wake up and not know what’s going to happen every minute. I do not want to expect every event of the day. I want to escape the rinse and repeat cycle. I want to be ambushed and cornered into making split-second, life-saving decisions.

You might also think I’m crazy. That part might be true. Lord knows I come by the crazy honestly. And that’s okay, I embrace the crazy. Crazy is where the change happens. It is where the gold resides. It is where evolution occurs. Crazy is where the genius happens and the creativity flows. It is the place where we fall apart to put ourselves back together in a better way. I don’t fear crazy although it can be scary as fuck. It’s the place where we feel uncomfortable, out of control. But it is also the place where we can explore the darkest and deepest recesses of our minds. Get into all the nooks and crannies that have been covered with dust and spider webs for so long. Explore the edges of our realities, desires, and capabilities. Embrace the messy and unknown. Be surprised for a change.

So bring it on. I’m ready. I can shoot, I can hunt, I can crochet, and I cook almost anything. I like solitude and I am okay with less. I am stocking up on canned goods, water, duct tape, and toilet paper. In the immortal words of Phillip Seymour in Along Came Polly, “MAKE IT RAIN”.

I mean I guess I also just do the work without the world ending event. But where’s the fun in that?
