Cycle of Light and Shadow: A Recovery Poem

Guest Contributor – William Christian

It’s bright outside—

a nice breeze,

birds chirping happily.

A door opens—

I walk in,

the door closes.

Inside, it’s dark and dank, a putrid memory

haunting my being.

Halls stretch long,

their beaten paths

etched by years of weary feet.

Unheard screams

whisper through the corridors, chilling me to the core.

Scenes flicker on the walls— an abandoned drive-in

of forgotten pain.

Can anyone else see it?

Or is it only me—

plagued by this vision,

this nightmare turned inward?

A blaring call

cracks the silence.

The loudspeaker’s voice drags me from my stupor.

What’s next?

A door opens—

I walk out.

It’s bright outside,

a nice breeze,

and the birds

are chirping happily.
